In the weeks leading up to the Resolution Run, I bought myself a $39 pair of running shoes from Costco.  Originally, I had been telling people that I was going in a race, but the words I used changed as the date loomed.

“What are you doing on New Years Eve?” They would ask.

“I’m doing a 5K.” I would say.

This was never an expected answer so it was a gateway to a conversation about the goals that I have set for myself to start MOVING in 2016, hopefully inspiring others to do the same, and committing to 12 races in 12 months.  The reality was that I would be mostly walking (hence why I was no longer calling it a race), as my Costco runners hadn’t even touched pavement until race day.

As I picked up my race package a few days before, the negative self-talk started creeping up.  “I have no business being out here with these runners.  Can I can do this? And, why am I doing this?”  I would say to myself.

As it turned out, I had every business being out there with all of the other individuals who made the commitment at 5:00 pm on New Year’s Eve to MOVE.  What gave me the most strength, was having my friend Bridget alongside of me for the 5K. We set our own pace and walked most of it.  Our hearts were pumping and we talked about our dreams and goals for 2016.  Taking my friend Patrick’s advice, he said “Whatever you do, run to the finish line.” We were cold at the start but warm at the end.  It was an epic start to the New Year and an inspiring one at that.

I’m looking forward to the 11 races in 2016 still to come, including some that are very family-friendly and provide races for the kids as well as the adults.  As the saying goes, “As with any journey, who you travel with can be more important than the destination.” Please consider signing up to one of the races below along with me!
